Our Philosophy

One philosophy in education is to force children to sit through difficult, boring and apparently purposeless tasks, usually repetitively, in order to cultivate discipline. This is one valid approach to learning and has been used by billions of people for thousands of years. An alternative philosophy is to reveal the natural beauty of every topic by carefully structuring the learning materials so that they are naturally enjoyable to consume. We use authentic, real-world movie clips to provide relevance and context to the English concepts that we teach. This instantly makes the content at least a little bit meaningful. It also helps students remember the English that we teach along with our videos, because the English appears inside a context, and there are moving visuals that the brain naturally remembers. Students often tell us they see words and phrases in the real-world that they remember seeing in the videos they have watched with us. They also remember the meanings from the contexts of these same scenes.

Discipline is a critical life skill. Success demands it. However, when a child loves a subject, discipline becomes less critical to their success. A child who enjoys a subject feels they are motivated internally by their own choices, rather than externally via the threat of punishment or the prospect of rewards. Intrinsic motivation unleashes powerful, sustained ability to persevere with a subject. Forcing children to sit through boring exercises that do not have clear explanations given within a wider framework of true understanding, robs the child of purpose, meaning, and relevance in their learning. This kind of approach very often leads to strained relationships between parents and children. You can either choose to push a boulder uphill your entire life, or push it once downhill, and let it roll with gravity. When you fight nature, you may win some battles along the way, but the risk is that you may eventually lose the war.

Another matter that often restricts students' progress is that they usually want exam tips and hacks to try and trick their way to better performance in school assessments. This can give you a small boost in performance, perhaps increasing your exam scores by 5 to 10 marks out of a 100. But how can you expect to achieve good results without understanding the language? Would you expect a native English speaker to perform well on a Chinese exam with just exam tips and hacks? Our tutoring services build your fundamental understanding of real English so that you will actually understand what you are reading, writing, hearing and speaking. You cannot write and speak properly in English without understanding grammar, yet many students try to succeed by simply speaking and writing a lot. They are usually just repeating the same mistakes over and over again, and reinforcing incorrect habits in their own minds. You cannot expect to succeed without a solid foundation of proper grammar.

Many parents want to know whether a tutoring service will follow the school's curriculum, yet the vast majority of people in Hong Kong complete 13 years of schooling and still can't understand or use English properly, especially when interacting with native English speakers. So, do you think the Hong Kong education system and the school curriculum is preparing your child effectively? There is no point in mastering textbook English if you don't know real English. Most ten-year-old native English speaking children can complete the Hong Kong DSE with ease, simply because they understand the patterns of English usage and how English actually works. When you learn English properly from the fundamentals, it doesn't matter whether you follow the school curriculum or not. These are the fundamentals we teach. We employ teaching tools that quickly build real English proficiency, and this delivers faster grade improvements than the school curriculum, which cannot be found anywhere else in Hong Kong.
